mix-it-up John Adams Middle School
Addressing the Empowerment, Communication Skills, and Cultural Awareness components of Girls In Action (GIA), Mix It Up Day is designed to help students cross the barriers of segregation that continue to exist in our schools. Featuring role play, group interaction, and debates on controversial issues, GIA girls report that the program increases their understanding of and ability to speak about gender and racial justice issues. One mother said: “GIA has helped build my daughter’s self-esteem by showing her that her friends have the same fears, worries, insecurities and questions as her.” The girls were very excited about being identified as leaders when they spoke in front of the John Adams Middle School student body during 2008/2009 Mix It Up lunch activities. Implemented at John Adams Middle School at the request of the Assistant Principal, GIA's Mix It Up program was selected a finalist for an NBC Today Show segment on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Mix It Up programs.
